Am I the only one?

Yesterday Josiah had his 9 month wellness check up (2 weeks early) and I was pretty excited because there were no shots that he needed to get so we could just get in and get out and everything would be fine. At least that's what I thought until our doctor told me she is concerned about his weight. He weighed in at 19lbs and according to his weight to height ratio he is now down the the 20th percentile for his weight (His cheeks make him look like he is a big boy but he really is pretty skinny). She is concerned because he continues to drop on the charts and this one in particular was a pretty big drop (30% drop). Since his last apt. at 6 months he has only gained one pound. I really haven't been concerned at all because he eats pretty good (although he did decide that he was not going to take a bottle anymore...at all...and I'm thinking of being done nursing soon) but I just didn't think this was something I needed to think about let alone be concerned about. I know I am probably just being overly worried about nothing at all and I'm trying not to be but I just can't get myself to stop. The weight issue is just the topping to my battle with worrying about him. I have a lot of friends with babies and the conversation that we usually have is referring to what milestone our baby is at. Milestones are great and I love talking about them but I usually leave the conversation feeling like Josiah is behind in some way. Right now I'm worrying about him not crawling yet. He is 8 1/2 months old and I feel like he should be because every other baby is. Am I crazy to be thinking like this? Am I the only one that worries about this stuff? I know I need to give it all to the Lord and I'm working on doing that but I wouldn't be honest if I didn't say it's been a huge struggle. Thanks for letting me share my heart.

It's now 8am and Josiah is still sleeping! This use to be a regular occurrence in our house until his top teeth started coming in over a month ago. We became very use to him sleeping through the night since he was 2 1/2 months old so when waking up at least once a night but usually 3 or 4 times a night started happening we were beside ourselves. It's so hard when you get use to something and then it changes. So I went in to check on him a few min. ago (not really sure why, just did) and I peaked my head in and was so confused because it looked like he was sleeping on his stomach. Most of you are probably thinking, "why is the confusing?" Since day one Josiah has hated being on his belly. We have always still given him belly time but he will just scream whenever he is on his belly. So when he started rolling over I thought he would get over that....hmmm...nope. It only became worse because he would get so upset that he was on his stomach that he would refuse to roll back over even though he knows how. Ahhh...very frustrating. This is also why I believe it will be awhile before he crawls because he just hates being on his belly. He can stand on his hands and knees and when he does that he is just fine but as soon as he falls over to the floor it becomes very loud in our house. Josiah loves books, so lately I just lay on the floor with him and read a book while he is on his belly and that is seems to help. Anyway, all this to say when I peaked in on him and he was on his belly this morning sleeping, after the shock wore off I stood there and smiled so proud of my little boy sleeping on his belly.

We are also done with his infant car seat as of a few weeks ago which has been a hard transition for me but not for Josiah. His car seat was more than just a car seat for us...it was also his bed when we were out later than his bed time. Last night at bible study was the first night we have been somewhere past his bed time since switching car seats so we contemplated on what we should do. We tried to get a babysitter but that didn't work out so we decided to bring our pack and play and set it up at the church. I was a bit worried as to how moving him in and out of the car and up to his bed would all go...thankfully he did really well. He was out cold the min. I put him in his pack-n-play at the church and then did not wake up at all through all the transportation! I'm not getting my hopes up that he will continue this through every transition from pack-n-play to car to crib but am very thankful that it went so smoothly last night.

Well this is beginning to get long so I will end here, just thought I would share with you my thoughts and a few happenings in the Huber household.

Eyes Closed

My handsome husband has a small problem while taking pictures...he can never keep his eyes open. Flash or no flash it does not seem to matter his eyes are always closed. And it appears the "eyes closed" genes have traveled to our son.

Traveling Baby Food

Josiah's Lunch today. (peas, sweet potatos, & corn)

A good friend from back in Peoria taught me the art of making my own baby food. I think I am still surprised at how easy it really is and I really enjoy doing it. Not only do I know exactly what I am feeding Josiah every day but I also am benefiting by saving our family a lot of money for which I am very thankful for. (Thanks Elise!) This thanksgiving however will be the first time I have needed to travel for more than just a day with the food and I'm just not quite sure how to go about it.
We freeze our baby food in ice cube trays and then put them into Ziploc baggies and then just pull them out of the freezer as we go. When I go for a day trip I just take them out and put them into small glass containers I have and put them in our little to-go cold storage container. It works perfectly but is not big enough for more than a days adventure and since we will be staying at a few different houses over the holiday I'm trying to figure out how to travel with it all. All this to say...if you have any idea's for me I would greatly appreciate it. I pray you all have a wonderful thanksgiving!

Back up and running!

After 7 long months with out internet the Huber household now has internet once again! I wouldn't be telling the truth if I didn't say I'm somewhat ecstatic about this. It's mostly just the little things like paying a bill online or checking out one of the many questions I have about parenting. Example: "How much should I be feeding my son now?" Anyway, I had been making a running list in my head of the many things I was going to look up when we finally got internet and wouldn't you know that now that we have it I can't remember a darn thing! All this to say though, I am very excited to have internet again and now will once again be better about updating our blog.

The last time I blogged was when Josiah turned 6 months old and to my surprise he is exactly 8 months old today...my how time goes by so fast. Here are a few highlights over the past two months.
Josiah:
-Can sit on his own
-Still refuses to think that being on his stomach is fun. Which is why I think it will be awhile before he starts crawling. On the times we can get him to enjoy a bit of time on his stomach he is turning around in circles and reaching hard for toys.
-Continues to grow and is now about 19 1/2 pounds and about 30 1/2 inches long.
-Still loves to jump, jump, jump! Anytime we have him standing he is always trying to jump.
-Loves to ride in the tractor/combine with Daddy!
-Absolutely loves reading books...especially, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear".
-Has two teeth on the bottom and has been working on the top two for the last two weeks. Needless to say it has been a long few weeks of a changed sleeping schedule but I think we are about done because the tips are about out.
-Is eating little puff cereal things.
-Has outgrown his car seat because he is too long. Which means no more putting him in his car seat when we are out with friends and it is his bedtime. This was so convenient, any ideas on what to do now?

Brett:
-Continues to work long hours on the farm trying to pick away at the slow harvest we have been having due to weather.
-Is building a dog house for his (I say "his" because I don't really care all that much) dog, named Dozer, which my brother Andy and his wife Amber have so graciously been taking care of until we make it to Minnesota for thanksgiving to pick him up.
-Has been able to go hunting usually at least once a week with his buddies Luke and Josh and a few others who have made it out for a weekend trip.
-Is leading a couples bible study for a group of young couples around the surrounding areas and doing a wonderful job if I might add. I'm so proud of him!


Myself:
-Canning! I type that with a bit of mixed feelings. I enjoy and love having canned foods from our garden but found that having a big garden is great for the product you get from it but it sure is a lot of work. I found myself doing it in shifts ever two days. I would try and do at least one batch every two days. Many of you are probably thinking, "why not just do it all in one day!" Good thought and I would have loved to but unfortunately I think Josiah would disagree. I'm realizing more and more each day that my life just looks different now. Yes, I can still do a lot of the same stuff that I have always done but it just looks different in the way that I do it.
-Photography! Something I love and have been hugely blessed in being able to do. I have been getting my name out a little more and have been able to do some family pictures, baby pictures, and senior pictures for people. It's been a lot of fun and a huge learning experience as I figure out exactly how I want to go about running this business.
-I had my first full day without Josiah a few weeks back. I missed him like crazy but was so very thankful for a day away with the girls thanks to my wonderful husband being able to take a day off of work and have a father/son day.

Well, those are a few updates and hopefully from here on out it won't have to be quite so long. Thanks for sticking with it and for doing that I have a special treat for you...pictures! Here are a few pictures from over the last two months (although sadly I lost most of the last 4 months of pictures by accidentally deleting them, but here's what I have).

6 months old!

Josiah is already a half-a-year old! Where has the time gone? Josiah and I traveled to Minnesota for a few days this last week (sorry to all of you we didn't get a chance to see) and since we have been home Brett has been constantly saying how big Josiah looks and how much more alert he is in just a few days time. I guess I haven't noticed as much but that's probably because I am with him as he grows each day so it's not so drastic of a change.

6 month old stats:

18lbs - 70th percentile
28in. - 96th percentile

we have a very tall little boy which means that if he continues to grow as much as he has every month we will be buying a new car seat by the end of the month. Crazy! Our doctor was showing us what his percentile stats look like if you combine his weight and height and because he is so tall his actual percentile for his weight is around 30%. You would not be able to guess that if you take a look at his cheeks, they are still has huge as ever!

I will post some 6 month pictures soon.

p.s. I found out today that we will probably be able to get internet at our place in 2 to 3 weeks (they are almost finished doing all the digging). I can't wait!

Camping with a baby!

We packed up the minivan or as Brett calls it, "the man-van" and headed off to the beautiful state of Montana early last Sunday morning. We were able to spend 5 days/4 nights in beautiful Glacier National Park. Neither of us had ever been there and we were both blown away with God's beautiful creation. I love, love, love the mountains!

Josiah did so well with all the traveling and staying in a tent! What a blessing! It was quite cold the first few days so he had to be bundled up a lot and was not a huge fan of having so many clothes on but he was such a little champ about it. The first night went really well bundling him all up and putting him in his car seat for the night and he slept right through the night just like he does at home. The second night on the other hand was a bit more interesting. We were up at Two Medicine Lake and had set up camp and gosh was the wind just howling with the temp in about the 40's. Before I was about to feed him his last meal before bed we decided it was just too cold and windy to sleep in the tent so we took everything out of the van and put it in the tent and set up camp in the van for the night. Not exactly roughing it I know but we were sure glad we did it as the night continued to get colder and windier. We packed up the next morning and decided to go to the other side of the mountain to see if the weather would be a little better there and sure enough it was. We took the most beautiful road I have ever been on to get there. Right in the middle of Glacier is a road that goes right through the mountains. I believe it is called Road to the Sun or something like that and my goodness it was beautiful. That night it was beautiful out and we were able to enjoy once again a night in the tent. We headed out of Glacier on Wed. and headed south to Bozeman. We ended up deciding we wanted to end the vacation with a night in a hotel. We ordered in our favorite pizza from McKenzie River Pizza Co. (amazing!) and took Josiah swimming in the pool for his first time swimming which he loved!

To make a long story short camping with a baby is not as difficult as it seems. My only recommendation is to go camping when it's a bit warmer so that during the day they wouldn't have to be so bundled up as well. But seriously any of you lovers of camping should take your babies...what an adventure!
